While I am not entirely certain this recording was meant to be the final collaboration of guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Pat Metheny and his faithful sidekick keyboardist and pianist Lyle Mays, it is also, apparently, the final PAT METHENY GROUP offering. Released in 2005, the CD features one short-ish Intro track, and then 3 very lengthy pieces that seem to find every note on the guitar as well as on the piano, as well as most of the chords that are available. Lyle Mays' death from cancer a few years ago, ended this partnership. From 1978 until 2005, The Pat Metheny Group (PMG) began as a quartet, and I think expanded at times, becoming an octet but I don't think ever less than a quintet from 1982's "Offramp". Not unlike Weather Report, which was another mostly instrumental band that seemed to always be changing partners, PMG traveled and toured extensively, nationally and worldwide, filling concert halls and arenas to the delight of tens of thousands of instrumental music fans. The musicianship of the ever-changing line-ups never seemed to suffer, the enthusiasm for each tune greeting the bands as they nailed every change-up, time jump, and solo section. "The Way Up" more or less manages to fascinate the listener, whether it is the US-released (68:10) version or the import with the slightly longer "Part Three" extending the total time to (72:04). Quite a feat, and a treat. Read full review
