If you read other reviewer's comments on Daniel Johnston you will quickly realize his songs are an acquired taste mainly because of the sound of his vocals, but also because of the rather poor audio quality of the recordings themselves. May of the tracks are copies of solo cassettes he did in his living room. Once you get past that and read the background on his bipolar disorder you realize he has a songwriting talent that is often pre-occupied with his troubles lyric-wise. I find his melodies quite haunting and memorable. You cannot help but feel sorry for his condition, but being a struggeling artist myself I am jealous that he gets hundreds of dollars for his "artwork" via mail order from his web site. Go figure!
This is tough to recommend in the good range since listening to Johnston requires so much from the listener. I had heard of Johnston for decades, but it was seeing the amazing documentary on him that led me to really appreciate his music beyond the reedy voice and the low-fi recording. The songs and the depth of feeling are as good as anyone else in the songwriting genre. This is a great collection of his work.
