This album has always held a very special place for me. I saw them at the time of the recording (1969) at Mother's in Birmingham. A few weeks earlier, I was present when Pink Floyd had recorded Ummagumma there, and Keith Emerson's band, The Nice were playing there regularly that summer. Fairport could have been the "something completely different" Monty Python joked about. Mellow melodic, using autoharp kind of like The Byrds or Lovin' Spoonful, mixing rock with new folk. And Sandy Denny's voice soared above it all. The songs stayed with you for weeks after - especially the long late night hitch back home to Coventry. My favourite - Joni Mitchell's 'Eastern Rain' with Sandy's sweetly husky, softly sexy voice perfectly complimented by Richard Thompson's resonant guitar solo. That night, Martin Lamble, the band's 19 year old drummer, was killed in a road accident on the M1 on the drive home. Partly because of that, this LP is an unforgettable memory of summer 1969. Listen to the 'Live at Sydney Opera House' LP to hear Fairport cut loose to their folk rock roots, with Jerry Donoghue's crisp guitar playing and fellow Cov Kid Dave Swarbrick's soaring fiddle breaks. But 'Holidays' is what the summer of 1969 was about for me.Read full review
I bought this cd after watching a programme about Sandy Denny. It is an excellent introduction to Sandy's work and that of Fairport Convention. The album has a mellow, folksy, almost medieval feel but also has bluesy rocker such as Mr Lacey that prevent it from falling into the twee category. Sandy's voice is soaring and pure and the songs prefectly complement it. The classic "Meet on the Ledge" is included, a beautiful, haunting song with melancholy harmonies; a showcase for Richard Thompson's songwriting. I cannot recommend this album enough.
