What a disappointment to listen to the Broadway version of Xanadu. It is very flat and missing the magical energy that was in the movie. Almost as bad as a big note organ music version of music that merged the big band sound with the Electric Light Orchestra rock band. The best Soundtrack songs were rearranged poorly. I even hesitate to donate this thing to the library.

If I could have, I probably gould have given it 4.5 out of the 5. I bought this based on the good reviews in the New York Times. I was a little skeptical about this show, since, as I have heard, it was apparently based on one of the worst movies of the 1980s, but I was curious. I bought this soon after I purchased Young Frankenstein (my thoughts on that CD are in another of my reviews), so I saw this as somewhat of a gamble. But, I didn't need to worry at all. The music is good and the storyline is pretty funny. My favorites from the CD include I'm Alive, Evil Woman, Suddenly, Fool, and Have You Never Been Mellow, but I don't have any songs that I really dislike. While I admit that I don't like the way that some of the lyrics tend to be repetitive and they try to whisper lyrics in a song, but it kind of adds to the humor of how bad the movie is, which is where you get most of the humor. While others I know think that the way that they do Evil Woman is awful, a complete desecration of the song, I think that it is completely hilarious. This may just be the pattern of the show, where you love it or you hate it, but its seems like a fun show to listen too and watch and I enjoyed it. I hope you do too. My husband and I saw the show on Broadway last summer. I was very excited to get the original cast recording to see if it lived up to my memory. It did! While the cd is funny, the show is hysterical! There are too many jokes to include in the cd but the cast still includes a few funny lines here and there. The voices are wonderful and the music is great. If you are a Xanadu fan, you won't be disappointed. FYI, Xanadu the Broadway show is coming to San Diego in Novemember 2008! I'll be there!
IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO HAR ALL THESE SONGS AGAIN. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE SHOW. TOTALLY CAMP BUT I LOVE IT. I'M a XAN FAN !!!!
