Way back when in 1988 when this, the first of what was stopped at volume #6, I was still relatively new to the music of Frank Zappa. I remember when I had first played this CD to my more savvy Zappa friends & they were immediately blown away. The beauty of the "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" series is that it encompasses a little from every band & era that Frank Zappa played with, from the original "Mothers of Invention" to the larger bands with the percussion & woodwinds & brass sections, so it is a veritable smorgasboard of Zappa that will thrill & delight everyone who enjoys the music, composing, & direction of the man, the miracle, the legend, that is Frank Zappa. This introduction to his live music, which were much more than concerts, but more like fantastic Broadway productions, as all of the musicians who played with Mr. Zappa were well trained & extremely talented, which when added to the humor & social/political commentary along with audience participation, a Zappa concert was more of a musical experience which left you in awe. No matter if the concerts were played in a large arena or a small concert hall, the audience was made to feel as if they were included intimately. With Volume 1 of the "You Can't Do That..." series, you are taken on a fun musical escapade, where you are introduced to various band members he had throughout the years, tantalized with Zappa's fantastic guitar playing & sent into ecstacy by how tight & on time ALL of the band played & even riffed verbally. You get to experience some of the best musical humor which Zappa fans will recognize from Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan (ala 'The Turtles' fame) *-if interested, you can hear more of this hilarious banter & fantastic music on the "Fillmore East" album -* then getting a taste of Zappa political/social commentary in the songs "I'm The Slime," "Dumb All Over" & you may even get a few goode laughs while learning & grooving to "Heavenly Bank Account" which touches on the horrendous atmosphere of TV evangelicals taking advantage of "the faithful." There is so much to be had when you want to listen to live Frank Zappa & this whole series will be a wonderful addition to Zappa fans of all sorts, whether you know all about him & have every studio album ever made & were able to see dozens of live shows, to those who have just been introduced or had discovered Zappa. There's so many wonderful songs, so many funny moments & some truly silly moments that were to be heard at the live shows & Frank Zappa did all sorts of musical voodoo to blend these songs from various eras & bands into a CD that sounds & feels as if it were from the same show. While we never know what the Zappa Family Trust will issue or reissue, it seems as if the "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" series is now totally discontinued & it would be wise to buy the CDs as soon as you can so that you don't miss out. Until things are brought up to better musical standards, it doesn't seem likely that the ZFT will release the Zappa collection via MP3s & iTunes, so be sure to get your paws on these 6 different CDs (or double disc sets) that make up this series & open your ears & mind to live music done perfectly. You can open your Zappa doorways by sampling these live CDs & working onto the other Zappa recordings. In my opinion, of all the live material that has been released, the "You Can't Do That..." series is the best of all. I hope you enjoy this CD & series as much as I do. Arf!Read full review
