Agalloch's music is difficult to categorize. It has elements of metal, folk, doom, classical, and others on the dark side of the musical spectrum. There are clean vocals and very tolerable 'death metal' vocals (I have never been a fan of cookie monster deth rock vocals, but these are different). Lots of great, catchy clean/acoustic guitar work. Atmospheric, epic songs that flow very nicely (not fragmented, difficult to listen to stuff like Opeth). Since I first stumbled upon them on itunes, Agalloch(Portland, OR) has become my favorite band. Their music is filled such with power and grace, it's difficult to explain in words just how great these guys are. 'The Mantle' is their 2nd full length CD, it follows 1999's 'Pale Folklore' and is followed by 2006's 'Ashes Against the Grain'. Each of their albums have their own distinct sound, yet they all sound like Agalloch, if that makes sense. If you appreciate dark, atmospheric music and great musicianship , just one listen to track #2, 'In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion' will blow you away. It's an epic, 14+ minute masterpiece that showcases Agalloch's song writing prowess.Read full review
