I previously wrote a review of Necrodeath's "Mater Of All Evil". I basically stated that that cd just did not grab me. Well, "Black As Pitch" did just the opposite. Right off the bat, Red As Blood and Riot Of Stars, the first 2 songs, come right at you. Burn And Deny slows it down a bit before resuming force again with Mortal Consequence. They mix it up all the way through the first 10 of the 11 songs on this cd. The 11th song stands alone. You may not want to listen to it every time - it is a strong, bizarre, forceful litany of persecution, heresy, and death with the narrator listing different years and numbers of people put to death. Not for the weak of heart, and while I thought at first this song was weak and didn't fit in with the rest of the cd, I was mesmerized when it went on. When it faded out after playing for a decent length, it sounded like there was more after the last date listed. Maybe the band wants the listener to investigate further on their own. ANYWAY, let's go back to the first 10 songs. On the Mater cd, I said the singer had some good screams throughout. Here, he exchanges a high percentage of his screams for more vocals. The guitarist is at the top of his game, with lots of timely changes. The bass player throws a lot of riffs in here, not just to throw notes in. And after all this, if a computer were to throw in the intricate drumming, you would have what this drummer has done. THE MAIN THING ABOUT THIS ALBUM is that it is VERY aggressive, venting their anger in a little universe of sorts(ours?). There is very good song structure here, even when they slow it down a little. Anybody who likes aggression, not unmindless, in their songs will really like this album. If in doubt, ignore the above Good rating and go with the Excellent one. You won't be disappointe.Read full review
