the first time i heard this band back in '02 or '03, i was hooked. i have a penchant for quirky, eccentric, original music, and dog fashion disco hits all the right spots. incorporating MANY styles of music (as mentioned in the previous review), they twist it and mold it into their own unique (most times intoxicatingly schizophrenic) sound. see, for example, vertigo motel [track 9] (my favorite =D) starts out with a piano melody, and some soft vocals, then the drums kick in with a couple somewhat quiet, somewhat distorted guitar chords, until the song kicks off into it's chipmunk sounding verse with funked up disco sounding beats. from there, the chorus comes in, with the first normal sounding vocals yet, and loud distorted guitars. there's also a jazzy interlude with a brass wind instrument i've yet to identify. that lasts around 30 seconds, until the guitars kick back up full throttle. the last words before the disco-beats ensue are "i'm spinning, i'm spinning, i'm spinning, I'M SPINNING". the ever-shifting beats, tones and styles are enough to produce a feeling of vertigo. especially if you're on something. this is their fourth album (maybe not their fourth "official" album, but whatever. i don't go for that official crap). i would recommend this one second to embryos in bloom. but a damn close second. so in closing, if you dig crazy lyrics (eg. dead people, tripping, and other assorted shinanigans) EXTREMELY versatile musicians, eccentric music, and funky stuff, there's something for everyone here. pick this up, you will not be disappointed. every song is a trip with these guys. If Frank Zappa and Alice Cooper had a baby who grew up to form a metal band, that band would be Dog Fashion Disco. It's not your average, every day music. It's enigmatic in a painfully pleasing way. Melodic and hard, rock and jazz, metal and classical. It's everything I need to make my eardrums bleed and sooth my savage breast on a Friday night. Dog Fashion Disco KICKS ASS!!!
The Mr. Bungle-esque sounds are pretty obvious on this record, and I mean this in a good way. Top tracks are "Leper Friend", "9 to 5 at the Morgue" and "Cartoon Autopsy".
