There are few more precious Brahms conductors of the 20th century than Carlo Maria Giulini. Here he teams with great artistry in the Edinburgh festival singers, the great German baritone Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau, and the best soprano performance of this work I personally have heard in the Romanian, Ileana Cortrubas. I do not know whether it is the genius of this work, its deep spirituality, or just my affinity for it (I'm hooked!), but this one touches me so. It is exemplary of a great Master (maestro) allowing his great touch to reach us from beyond the grave (2005 at 93 years of age)one more time. Those of you, like me, familiar with his Vienna Philharmonic recording of this same work will cherish this one too for its understated elegance and triumphant sonority as it winds its way into requiem.Read full review
