I'm fairly certain this was the Pogues' most successful album commercially and with songs like "Fairytale of New York" and the title track, why not? However, I wouldn't get too excited about the bonus tracks. Similar to those featured on Rum, Sodomy & the Lash, I understood rather quickly why none of them were included on the initial album release (i.e., they aren't that good). Still, this album's worth having, particularly if you like mashups of punk rock and Irish/Celtic folk.
It is the definition of "rollicking"! No foot can resist tapping; no feet can resist dancing. This was my first Pogues buy, but it won't be my last! Irish yes, but definitely has that Cajun sound as well. This recording has bawdy moments, sentimental moments, and everything in between.
After the first two excellent albums, this was a step down. Writing not nearly as sharp and provocative. Seems a more instrumental than vocal based album. Less excitement and surprises.
Really enjoyed listening to this. Great party music and very festive. Will love it this St. Patricks day.
