Kula Shaker first hit the scene with their album K in 1996. In my opinion, Pigs Peasants and Astronauts is even better, for it's rare to find an album that you can play from start to finish and go on a journey. With its Indian Sitar influences and some profound (but not pathetic) lyrical stories, I find myself hearing this album more and more. Inspired by the album, I was overjoyed to see that Kula Shaker have recently reformed and have been gigging, and I was lucky enough to see them in Brighton UK in mid-August 2006. All I can say is that it was one of the best gigs I have seen in my life and the group is possibly even better live than studio recorded - and that's brilliant. Tracks to look out for on PP&A are 'Great Hosannah' (it grows on you and it's now my track of the year), tailed by 'Last Farewell', 'Sound of Drums' and the heart-lifting 'Shower your Love'. Chrispian Mills and co are fine musicians, vastly underrated, and I really hope that get the acclaim they deserve. I recommend PP&A to anyone - if you don't like it, resell it on ebay - but if you are someone who likes a touch of hippy values and feel-good music with great rhythm, then try this. Look out for the 10th Anniversary version of PP&A too, released 20th January 2010.Read full review
It took me long enough but I finally got around to getting a copy of Kula Shaker's second album. From being a fan of their first album 'K' for some years and from the first few hearings I can report that 'Peasants Pigs and Astronauts' is a fairly enjoyable romp. Like a tentative meeting with an old acquaintance after a long spell, Kula Shaker's second album happily doesn't disappoint by showing that they haven't changed too much from when you last met them. Avoiding the Notoriously Difficult Second Album Syndrome by following the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' maxim, Kula Shaker provide more of the same with a few changes thrown in. Sounding a little harder in places than previously, a touch of Roger Waters' angst perhaps, and with more samples and orchestration in the background to add colour 'Peasants..' makes for fun listening with enough songs of single-release quality packed in along the way. Fans of 'K' will undoubtedly be fans of 'Peasants...' too. Where the album fails, for me, is where it tries too hard. Too many samples, too much happening in the background (sometimes foreground)and maybe not enough focus and direction. Where 'K' was an inspired one way canter through the Kula soundscape, 'Peasants...' offers the same journey and the same destination but with some crossroads and pit-stops added. I suppose its up to you; how do you like to travel?Read full review
I have always been into this band. I first bought the "K" album in the late 90s, and have always meant to get the next album. So i was pleased to see it on Ebay and better still got it for under £2.00.
Very 60s feel to music. It's quite unusual & different. I bought it because I have their K album & love it. I've just purchased their 2007 album on e bay so looking forward to that arriving.
