Firstly..the actual product & delivery was first class...now about the album..After loving Maiden since the first album, I'd started to lose interest after No Prayer & didn't buy this next album. The 90s had arrived & so had grunge & the Black album. I however discovered Death Metal so Maiden were forgotten and with the departure of Bruce & Adrian I thought their time was up. Then came their return & I bought Brave New World - Wow! I loved this New Maiden & I've bought all albums since, as well as Bruce's solo stuff...but...I never did get round to buying the 2 Blaze albums or Fear of the Dark sooo I finally got round to it. How could I not enjoy an album with possibly the bands best live track FotD? I expected to be saying how foolish I'd been to ignore this album but while it's not a bad album - it's Maiden ffs, it's just OK... Quick or Dead has a decent riff but the vocals & lyrics let it down, Here To Eternity..maybe they thought the chorus would make it a classic live track, but it's just not good enough. Afraid to Shoot Strangers is much better, Bruce's voice sounds better on this slower paced track, the lyrics are better but it's the guitars that really lift this above the the rest, next Fear is the Key, another mid pace track is ok, the middle section just feel like fillers, not bad songs but nothing memorable, until we get to the final 2 tracks - The best & the worst of the album Weekend Warrior! A song about a football hooligan! The lyrics are maybe the worst I've heard on any Maiden album & it's not really helped by Bruce's vocals and the guitars are just OK. They saved the best til last & anyone who has seen them live knows how fantastic Fear of the Dark is, jeez, how could they have written this masterpiece without being inspired to write better material for the rest of the album? I apologise If Ive been negative but as I said the title track shows they still had it in them to write fantastic music but the rest of the album just seems like they didn't care. Hey, it's still Maiden and at 50% theyre still better than most bands so I still play it & if you buy it just for FotD it's worth it....although if you really only want that track you'd be better off buying Rock in Rio and hearing it how it's meant to be performed 'live'! + the rest of the album is great & you can hear Sign of the Cross & Clansman without buying the other 90s studio albumsRead full review
