Can fingers actually move that fast from fret to fret? This is some classic guitar work and worth your admiration. While some purists thought this a sell-out due to there being vocals on 5 of the 18 tracks, there is no reason to suspect that Joe has fallen into the pop-culture trap of the music industry. He displays his talents with creativity and proficiency, and doesn't over do his first attempt at lead vocals, which was wise. There is lots of variety on this cd and literally, Satriani can do it all! Although the keys might be somewhat repetitive on Blue Dream, the title-track, they provide a good backdrop for this encouraging piece of music that's perhaps a nudge into the spiritual beyond. Potato Head Groove combines riffs and chord sections nicely. Can't Slow Down is upbeat, reminiscent of ZZ-Top or Billy Squier. Strange is simple yet reveals some layered guitar-work and the vocal does work (even if barely, as with the accoustic Believe). Too bad Hamm's funky bassline is so short. Big Rush, is much like Van Halen or Dire Straits. Bad Moon is a bit bluesy, like George Thorgood or older Colin James. Never has the banjo sounded so cool as on The Feeling and the humourous Phone Call. Beach is simply beautiful and a classy jam. Just when you'd think it can't get any faster it does. Back to Shall reminds me of ZZ-Top or something Eddie Van Halen might dream up. Ride provides an aptly titled philosophy for the road. The first Bells of Lal has Hamm making another guest appearance and this time lays down a really funky bassline throughout. If one wanted to be overly critical, some additional bgv's might have been nice and you can't lose by adding more Stuart Hamm on bass. Otherwise, this is simply put, great cruising music!Read full review
I had this album in cassette form when it first came out. My roommates 3-year old son wanted to find out what was inside a cassette.(Yes, he did make it to 4!) When I first got into E-bay, the first thing I did was put it into the search engine. Imagine my surprise when I found at least 4 different auctions going on at the same time! I lost 1 auction, so I decided to bid on another one. This was a digitally re-mastered CD. I couldnt believe the clarity. This album was awesome to begin with, but the digital re-master was absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!!! One of the reasons I got hooked on Joe Satriani at the time was a story in Rolling Stone about how he stayed in his house for almost 2 years, playing guitar for 14-18 hours a day. I figured if he had that kind of drive, he should be a pretty good listen. Boy, am I glad I checked him out. I have played this CD constantly since I got it, and even have my kids hooked on it! In closing, another killer album of his is "Surfing With The Alien". Check him out. I dont think you will be disappointed!!Read full review
Guitar wizard Joe Satriani sings? Yes, sir/madam! "Big Bad Moon" is one of six vocal selections and is regarded by many as one of his finest songs. It's an extremely hard rockin' blues number that never lets up. A classic. He also uses different styles for his songs. There are serious "I Believe," and humorous "The Phone Call." He's a decent singer, but obviously it's at guitar shredding that he really shines. Every song on this one is cool, but as far as I'm concerned, "The Forgotten (Parts 1&2) are worth the whole price alone. This two part number is unbelievable and is beautiful in a heavy, sad kind of way. This album has to be heard to be believed, so why don't you stop reading and buy it?

This is an old release. I lost it long ago and re-aquired. If any of you guitar folks out there don't have this, I would encourage you to aquire it. Smooth Cruisin' music, quick technical phrases and crisp, clean melodic tunes. As mentioned, It's an old release, but a must have for anyone who respects the hard work and dedication it takes to become a great player. Thank you for your time in reading!
