The selections demonstrate the unique texture of instrumentalist and composition present in Ellington's band in those early days. Duke wrote instrumental pieces to accentuate and feature the individual soloists in his band. The creole and African mix influence of New Orleans was dominating his creative process at the time. This period of Ellington's develeopement before the Strayhorn era began was the most ethnic derived time of his prolific career. The popularity of the band was primarily due to this ethnicity and unique presentation.
