I originally bought this DVD because it contained performances by two of my long time favorite progressive metal groups Megadeth and Dream Theater. I was not disappointed by these earthshaker tidbits, as both of these groups perform up to their potential, although I do miss Marty Friedman's guitar prowess next to the mighty Dave Mustaine with Megadeth. Dream Theater...do I need say more? They are talented to the point of being from another universe and they prove it yet again on this amazing mini set from them. Everyone I've shown this to who is not real familiar or have ever seen Dream Theater perform were in awe at their jaw dropping technical display of super-sophisticated expertise as each individual member's abilities mesh together to form music with non-stop crunch, yet unimaginable melodies. As for the rest, another reason I bought this, and probably the primary one, was to see Symphony X perform, which is a rarity indeed. Michael Romeo's blistering speed riffs and solo work are not for the faint guitarist at heart to watch. You always here someone say, "should have seen 'im...you can't see his fingers move!" In the case of Symphony X's underrated and unknown virtuoso he rivals the amazing Yngwie Malmsteen in giving truth to this usual fallacy. This particular set seems to rely too much on Romeo for entertainment, as even his mates favor him on stage. But I was impressed, and left wanting more. The other groups performing are a treat and were not ever seen by myself before other than Fear Factory, whom I once saw when they were very young. They have reached superstar levels as they have matured and polished through the years. Nevermore was a very pleasant surprise rendering a blistering metal set with more alien guitar work. I haven't digested this whole thing yet. But I know I am wanting more...lots more. My hats off to Dave Mustaine, he knows how to pick 'em better than Ozzy. For the practicing musician, I am more impressed with this selection of acts than what is normally seen at Ozzfest. I am going to try to make this show if it comes my way again, and hopefully Dave finds some more acts form around the world who deserve to be seen and heard by us discriminating progressive metal fans who want to see someone who can really play well, rather than prance around doing the headbanger's dyslectic chicken stomp, gutturally yelling and cursing every other word to render arousal from the crowd. With this bunch you can see an almost lost art in today's music, someone who can really demonstrate their virtuosity at their instrument. Well worth the meager price of admission and a wonderful addition to any picky headbanger's collection.Read full review
