Osmium was Parliaments first album, and this much is evident upon listening, as it has a very unproduced, raw sound, which may be appealing to some listeners. Realeased in 1970, the same year as George Clinton's other band, Funkadelic's self-titled debut, the album is a lot more similar in sound to it's more rockier counterparts than later Parliament releases, so much so that it would probably be more at home as a Funkadelic album. Nevertheless, while having no real 'funk' tracks per se, the album still has some great guitar licks courtesy of Eddie Hazel, and as stated before is probably one more for fans of Funkadelic than of Parliament. But if your into both, like myself, then you're sure to like it. Stand-out tracks include 'I Call My Baby Pussycat', which is more mellow in tone than the later re-recording appearing on the Funkadelic album America Eats It's Young, as well as 'Funky Woman', and the Ruth Copeland penned 'the Silent Boatman' is certainly interesting. All in all this is a good album for fans of George Clinton's Parliafunkadelicment thang, but if you're a new comer I'd advise you to start elsewhere, such as with Mothership Connection or Funkentelecy Vs. The Placebo Syndrome.Read full review
