With their 2007 LP, 'Phantom Limb', US grind band Pig Destroyer manage to get across both authentic anger and one of the best combinations of typical and untypical riffs and drum patterns in modern grind/death. The Virginians thrash through the first seven tracks in a frantic manner until they shift gears back to a more rythmical and even groovy approach, as in "Loathsome" or "Heathen Temple". Shouter J.R. Hayes amazes with his radical vocal support that never seems to get boring or uninspired. The only downside is the somewhat anti-climactic last fourth of the album that seems to repeat what works fine in the beginning and middle. All in all, 'Phantom Limb' is a high-class deathgrind package incorporating furious instrumental work, manic shouting, variety in track length and speed, and lyrics representing a dull look at a world that is blown to pieces. My personal recommendations are 'Thought Crime Spree', 'Phantom Limb' and 'Heathen Temple'.Read full review
