This could so easily have just been another race movie, like 'Days of Thunder' and appealed to the petrolheads exclusively. However, with Ron Howard at the helm and a tremendous true story to work from, this movie was simply brilliant. Rush follows the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt (Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Bruhl). Two men who are poles apart in their approach to their chosen profession but both driven by the same ultimate goal. Understandably, there is a degree of dramatisation of the rivalry between Hunt and Lauda, including the fabrication of events that never happened and omitting certain interesting facts: such as Hunt and Lauda shared a flat in London early on in their careers. The chemistry between Hemsworth and Bruhl is brilliant. Hemsworth's portrayal of Hunt was excellent and there wasn't a trace of his native Aussie tongue in his upper-crust English accent! Bruhl as the clinical Lauda was nothing short of perfect and both lead actors performances made for compelling viewing. Perhaps having an American at the helm led to a more balanced movie as Hunt and Lauda were both portrayed as very human and flawed characters where it would have been so easy to simply portray them as mere stereotypes; and I was glad that neither man was characterised as the villain of the piece. Although I commented that this wasn't a movie just for petrolheads, I don't think F-1 fans will be left disappointed. I was particularly impressed by the race scenes and the authenticity of the film in general, capturing the essence of the mid-1970s beautifully. The story itself is intelligent with a touch of humour but due to the subject matter, is also exciting and times deeply dramatic. The tragedy that befell Lauda is dealt with admirably and in unflinchingly real fashion. Lauda himself has commented on its portrayal in this film. Additionally, Rush does not shy away from Hunt's use of drugs, failed marriage and also sensitively narrated his passing. I'm not a fan of Formula One or motor racing, Rush is unquestionably a very good movie.Read full review
RATINGS-BY-CRITICS-&-AUDIENCE: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rush_2013/?search=rush (rottentomatoes.com) indicates 89%-of-critics & 88%-of-audience liked it. CRITICS CONSENSUS: A sleek, slick, well-oiled machine, Rush is a finely crafted sports drama with exhilarating race sequences and strong performances from Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl. MY SIMPLE-SUMMARY OF PLOT. Based on a true-story - the 1975-&-1976-pursuit-of-Formula-1-World-Champions between rivals Austria's-Niki-Lauda & England's-James-Hunt. One gets seriously-injured in 1976, but comes back. This movie is Formula-1-Racing's-version of "Brian's Song." I saw a news-article about the movie: The stars-chosen strongly resembled the actual people. PLOT: Two-time Academy Award (R) winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon) teams once again with two-time Academy Award (R)-nominated writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen) on Rush, a spectacular big-screen re-creation of the merciless and legendary 1970s Formula 1 rivalry between gifted English playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth of The Avengers, Thor) and his disciplined Austrian opponent, Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl of Inglourious Basterds, The Bourne Ultimatum). (c) Official Site A-LIST STARS: Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde, Lesser-known Olivia Wilde, Director-Ron-Howard. All 3 stars delivered great performances. HOLLYWOOD ERROR: In real-life, Austrian-Niki-Lauda & England's-James-Hunt were friends, & admired-&-respected each other.Read full review
I like racing movies, especially those that are based on true stories. The only reason I didn't give the movie my highest rating (and I was surprised considering that it was a movie by Ron Howard) (Andy would have washed Oppie's mouth out with soap)....was because of the excessive profanity (unnecessary) and the overdone scenes with unnecessary nudity. Don't let little kids watch this one. Other than that the basic movie was entertaining and the racing scenes were very good.
