This movie is a wonderful presentation of a classic of Latin literature. Italian art films from the 1960s are quirky by today's standards but they are excellent viewing! The bawdiness of classical Rome and the quest to restore virility after offending the gods is on full artistic display in the Fellini's cinematic adaptation of The Satyricon.

Read The Satyricon by Petronius. It is the funniest 2000 year-old story you'll ever read. Then DON'T see the Fellini film, because... well.. it isn't funny. Nor is it meant to be. And therein lies Fellini's huge mistake-- Petronius' Satyricon is first and foremost a SATIRE, and Fellini's movie version, while containing some arty satirical elements, is ultimately a high-minded (but none-too inspiring) inner-quest movie. If only Fellini's superior protege Pasolini had made this movie instead, it would have truly exuded the reckless love of life that Petronius' work so wonderfully typified.
Dear friends - I have been looking forward to seeing this film, and have found it to be quite unusual. They don't make films like that anymore. I can't see how it can be surpassed.

Intense beautiful visuals as many Fellini films. Avoid if homophobic. I love this film for it's beauty and interesting story.
