For their debut album Tomahawk doesn't leave a lot behind given the band members. Duane Denison(the Jesus Lizard), Kevin Rutmanis(Cows/Melvins), John Stainer(Battles/Helmet), and of course frontman Mike Patton make a great collaboration as a group. The one thing they do really well on this record is that it's very acessible to any new listener or one who only might be familar or like one of the band members other works. Flashback the opening track could have very well been played on alternative radio(and might have been, but not where I lived). But it starts the record so well and we're off for forty minutes enjoying every riff, and noise, and scream, and song the band can throw at us. I go back to my original point and reititrate that the record is a very easy listen. Their second record Mit Gas(German for with gas) is a little more expieremental than this one. But if you can get through this, their other records should be a breeze. This is a really good, and easy debut to get through. No frills, but nothing to hard to get through either. Maybe that was the plan, or it ended that way. What I do know is that this may not be what people consider a supergroup, but the record itself is superb. Especially tracks like 101 North, God Hates a Coward, and Sweet Smell of Success really are great songs. It creates a mood and really takes off with it. Tomahawk start off real strong with this one, and in my opinion it only gets better if you choose to keep going. Their follow up releases are very good. Like I said Mit Gas, and the newest release Oddfellows are amazing records. Anonymous is also very good, probably my least favorite. But if it was their only release it would be my favorite. I keep going, but if you think you're ready to listen to this band you should listen to this one first and the rest in chronological order. Because each one brings a unique expierience, and they really don't repeat a lot from record to record. It's a seperate expierience each and every time.Read full review
IMO, this first album is the freshest & best offering from this amazing supergroup! We knew mixing the lyrical influences of Faith No More frontman with musical stylings of the Jesus Lizard, Melvins & Helmet would produce a hard hitting sound, but who’d have imagined it’d be so ethereal, dare I say Lynchian at times! Five star album easily.
