WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST reached #6 in April 1980 and shows a band progressing towards their eventual peak. "And The Cradle Will Rock" is one of the album's two radio staples, along with "Everybody Wants Some." These two anthems set the stage for one hell of a rock & roll party album. "Fools," a relatively obscure VH tune, features thumping rhythm, the piercing background vocals of bassist Michael Anthony and some David Lee Roth scatting at the end. Roth declares "I'm takin' whiskey to the party tonight and I'm lookin' for somebody to squeeze" in "Romeo Delight." Preferring sneaky licks and heavy riffs, Eddie Van Halen does fit some excellent acoustic work into "Could This Be Magic" and "In A Simple Rhyme." WACF shows a hungry, talented rock band delivering the goods. Longtime producer Ted Templeman helps the band achieve their signature sound, producing a fantastic album.Read full review
1980 was a good year for Van Halen, they were touring and selling out large arena venues all over the USA. To follow their first 2 releases were gonna be tough but they lived up to the hype with "Women & Children First". This was the period in time that I was turned onto the band by a neighbor friend of mine who was a little older than me. I remember listening to this on cassette and being blown away by Eddie on guitar and the vocal range of Diamond David Lee. If your a VH fan then this is a must own! If you love good hard rock from either the 70's or 80's then you too should look into getting this cd, its now a classic and is easily in the category of finest material put out by the band (although I think both the first release and 1984 are just a bit superior if you ask me)...this is my 3rd favorite early VH (material w/ Dave that is).Read full review
I think this is a good album but it's definitely not great. My personal favs by VH are FAIR WARNING, 5150, VAN HALEN 1, and 1984. I have to say that these remasterings of the first four or five albums are super excellent!! They are very very loud so you won't have to tax your amp!!! Just super crisp remasters. I hope you like this third album by Van Halen. ENJOY!!!!

ALTHOUGH IT CERTAINLY DOESN'T LIVE UP TO OTHER VAN HALEN CD'S SUCH AS 1,2 AND 1984,WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST HAS IT'S MOMENTS.I WOULD RANK IT AS THEIR 5TH BEST BEHIND 1,2,1984,FAIR WARNING THEN WOMEN AND CHILDREN AND FINALLY DIVER DOWN. IT STARTS OUT WITH A BANG WITH 2 CLASSICS; CRADLE WILL ROCK AND EVERYBODY WANTS SOME BUT FIZZLES OUT QUICKLY AFTER THAT. TAKE YOUR WHISKY HOME IS THE ONLY OTHER DECENT SONG ON THE CD. NOT THEIR BEST BUT NOT THE WORST EITHER.
