Now,reviewing a CD like this is tough cause what do you compare it to? The old venom in their early days in the 80"s.Not a fair comparation especially to Welcome to Hell and Black Metal.Do you compare them to the new and younger bands who took up the black metal flag and is currently waving it after they created the genre?or, do compare to the old ass survivors like Ozzy,Iron Maiden,Dio,Motorhead and etc....? If you do that then they come out on top with perhaps Motorhead a distant second. Though, they might not have the energy or I should say Cronos, (cause the only original member)he had when he was young. It has changed the evilness of the cut-your-throat with a broken bottle vocals which is his voice.Cronos sounds more eviler now than when he was younger. If such a thing can be true.Remember,Venom was the one of the first band who made heavy metal fun and evil as should be.No power ballads,no gay frontmen with high pitch squealing voices,no glam bullshit,no complex guitarwork and deep confusing Maidenish/Dio-like lyrics.Venom was pure un-adultered evil kickass metal.O.k. a little heavy on metal gear and the cartoonish satanism. But,the creators of black metal knew what they was doing even the rest of the world didn't figure it out.Always people never give credit to Venom or Cronos even today;Venom is considered as like caveman who stumbled on the invention of fire or in this case black metal! But,if that is true then how do you explain when so people try to sounds like him they come off sounding Beavis and Butthead with their dadadaddadadadada-not-scary-but-annoying black metal yelping. On this Cd Venom(cronos) proves they are on top of their game. And,the band behind the man is great, too. The old school metal can still kick ass in these days of Cradle of Filthness and Dimmu borgiring the countryside.Cronos the black metal vampire that won't remain dead.Antechrist and uncle Satan will be proud of the black metal creator.Read full review
Being 2006, I am a bit leary when any of the the "old school bands" decide to come out with a new album. Usually it is a watered down weak release from what used to be a great band. Fortunately this is not the case with Metal Black! Venom are not reinventing the "Satanic Wheel" by any means, but this album would fit in perfectly with some of their older releases. There is that classic Venom sound, some great Venom riffs, and really decent production without making the album sound to "commercial". The bad point...as the album goes on, some of the songs begin to sound a bit alike. Overall though, I would definately recommend this release to both "Old" and new fans of Venom! Thanks!
