Though trombonist Glenn Miller emerged during the "hot jazz" scene of the 1920s, it was in the `30s with his own orchestra that he made history. Miller's genteel, melodic trombone led a swinging band (spotlighting some very unique arrangements for wind instruments) through a huge batch of sweet, sentimental, and danceable tunes. Miller was a star not only in peacetime (his was one of the most popular bands ever in pop and jazz history) but during the war as well, in fact leading a dance band while in the Army. These recordings are drawn from Miller performances originally broadcast throughout war-torn Europe in 1944--no doubt soothing to all during that grave conflict.
