Year of Desolation has graced us with their latest self-titled offering of melodic thrash metal here. I have to admit, from begining to end, this album is quite a ride. Many of the songs seem to have death metal influences, as the drums feature blazing fast double bass, which isnt very common in traditional thrash. The guitars pump out long droning type riffs and quick thrashy riffs as well. What keeps me from giving the album an excellent rating is mainly the hardcorish vocals. It may be a tad biased, but I am not a fan of hardcore music, and to me, the vocals sound really out of place along side such brutal and melodic metal. The only other gripe I have with the album is the tendency for the band to use hardcore breakdowns, which in my opinion, have no place in real metal, but they are not used to extremes and do not really take away the overall enjoyment of the music. The lyrics are pretty interesting, and seem to lean a lot on the theme of violence. All in all, Year of Desolation is pretty decent, and it would be a shame to overlook this album for a few minor flaws (depending on your musical tastes I guess).Read full review
