I've been a fan of zao for the past 8 or 9 years, so I've experienced just about every incarnation of the band. Right off the bat, this album is downright brutal sounding, and is a more accessible album than anything they've released in a while. Honestly, I wish they would shy away more from the singing, not that it's bad singing, but I feel the whole album is weakened by it. Zao is Dan Weyandt's incredible throat-shredding vocals, and anything else takes away from that. Songwise, about half of the album is amazing, and the rest is is mediocre to pretty good, which is a considerable step forward, seeing as albums like Self-Titled and Parade of Chaos had some great songs, and then some downright bad ones. If someone has never listened to Zao, this would be a really good album to start with, but their newest release The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here is actually becoming my personal favorite up there with Blood and Fire.Read full review
