Surreal masterpiece of burlesque noir. You really do feel as if you are on a lysergic tinged ride in some lost episode of a 1960's psychological thriller. I'm sure this has been reviewed to death, words are not enough.

Generally regarded by most jazz historians as his masterpiece. Originally designed as one continuous piece, but broken into 4 parts at the request of record company executives, it is built around a Spanish/Mexican guitar theme. The old and the new collide in the recording, the old, (Duke) Ellington’s influence on Mingus’ writing, and the new, his awareness of the free-jazz scene around him at the time. Mingus demanded that the words “Ethnic Folk-Dance Music” appear on the LP cover, with no mention of jazz. Nobody in jazz had produced anything like it in 1963, not even Ellington, and very few have ever come near it today. Amongst the ever-shifting changes of metre and tempo, and mood swings from lullaby to dissonance, alto saxophonist, Charlie Mariano, plays some of his best solos. A classic, don’t miss it.Read full review
