I had wanted this album/CD since my on-air days in college. In fact I often opened my show with "Acknowledgment". There is just an indescribable fire in this quartet's playing (I don't think any member of this group is still with us). Though more than a few Jazz recordings of the mid 60's fall within the afore description, this group had been so prolific and creative, I wonder might there be some outtakes from this session still in the vaults. "Psalm" is so powerful and dramatic a track; whenever I listen I perceive an ascension... a rising sun or phoenix if not some great revelation. --Listen to this CD, study it-- There are critics who state that John reached his peak in the 50's or so. They evidently know more than I do, nevertheless I like the latter Coltrane era which includes the Complete Africa Sessions as well as his collaborations with Johnny Hartman. A Love Supreme is a consistent choice in lists of all-time must-have recordings. Call me cheap but being patient was a virtue in getting this on Half.com. If there must be a negative, it is some of the recording quality of the original masters. I expected John's sax to fill the room rather than just attack from one side. Alas I am happy that my Coltrane collection is one step nearer to completeness.Read full review

I bought A Love Supreme because it is John Coltrane's best work. I'm not saying that because I buy into what critics say, but I truly believe that. The protege of Miles Davis, comes into his own with this resplendent album which is his thanks and praise to God (for a successful career, wife and children, and recovering from a heroin and alcohol addiction). I enjoy jazz with its rythmically complex melodies as it transcends sounds and transports you to a new world composed of the notes created by the artist. Some albums, I can put on for ambiance. I can't do this with this album, because the song enraptures me and forces me to listen to the harmony created, by the instruments, Coltrane's low murmur of "A Love Supreme," and the feeling of intense spirituality coerced from me due to this album. This album runs the gamut from slow and plodding, to a faster pace, but able to return to a steady trot never leaving the listener lost with the sounds and rhythms jazz can create. Four tracks, ~33 minutes long, and one of the best albums you could ever purchase. A must listen.Read full review
