Honestly, I've had this album for a while and finally decided to buy it because there are some tracks that are mind-blowingly beautiful and i'm planning to sing his version of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes at my jazz recital at the end of the year. The fact that it is recorded live makes it even more unbelievable how perfect Elling's vocal control/tone is. some truly special moments and it's probably my favourite Elling album. But! But Elling is his own worst enemy. He destroys this and his other albums, despite the incredible moments, with his bullshit. There are too many tracks of his ranting beat poet crap. I respect that he is determined not to be just another singer of jazz standards but his lyrics come accross as so pretentious. He is obviously a great entertainer but too many of the tracks are only of interest the first listen and then they become annoying. All of his albums contain this major flaw. He would do well to write his own tunes like Vince Jones (also prone to ranting) instead of trying to twist great old tunes into something "interesting" by adding vocaleses etc. To be modern how about writing new tunes. I'm crazy right? He's got an amazing intrument and spiritual depth, surely he can put that together to sing an entire album full of beautiful moments. Dear Mr Elling please please please cut the crap.Read full review
