I really shouldn't write a review of this artists' music because I was her biggest fan. She could have sung 'Mary had a little Lamb', and I would have loved it. I have every album, cassette tape and CD ever released by her as well as being a member of her FAN CLUB. I still mourn this women even after ten years and have tears forming in my eyes as I try to write this. We miss you Phyllis, but no one more than me. I bought this CD and a couple of others that I already have because the tapes aren't playing correctly any more.
Released in 1979, "You Know How To Love Me" was the late Phyllis Hyman's most successful Arista album. The title track is deservedly viewed by many as one of the Disco genre's classiest hits (in fact, it could easily be argued that Hyman sings it as if it were a romantic ballad) and it became a staple of her live repertoire up until her death in 1995. The lushly orchestrated and simply sublime romantic ballads "Some Way", "Give A Little More", "But I Love You" and "Complete Me" are all classic Hyman ballads which (while not released as singles) were perfect for her. Granted, this album was not a huge commercial success when first released but the songwriting and production team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas gave Phyllis some top-notch material that made this her best Arista release--and it is (today) considered a true classic by most standards.Read full review
Phyllis Hyman has always been one of my favorite artists & this is definitely one of her best albums, even though it wasn't one of her biggest sellers. Her smooth vocals & seemingly unlimited range make both slow ballads & upbeat tunes sound equally amazing. As many, taken from us way too soon, a lost spirit hopefully now resting in peace.
