Any lover of modern jazz should have Bud Powell in his collection. However, if you can only sneak one on to the desert island, it's close between this and the Bird/Diz, Massey Hall Concert recording. Examples all over the place of why Powell was renowned for his dazzling right hand. The music, at least to me, still sounds fresh and the 18 year old Sonny Rollins plays a full and surprisingly mature part in the small group ensemble. I particularly enjoy 'Ornithology' especially as it's played at a swingy rather than full steam ahead, last man to the pub pays, type of tempo. Just a small bleat. Listeners may feel a sense of deja vu as they progress though the works. This is not an illusion because, of the 20 tracks , no fewer than nine are alternate takes. Good for completists, of course, but not so fine for other music lovers requiring a broader brush. Nonetheless, using E-Bay, I did not have to pay top dollar so why should I moan?
