The second release by Seattle-based pianist-composer Horvitz's classic quartet (originally known as Zony Mash Unplugged but now as Sweeter Than the Day) expresses the more reflective side of Wayne's temperament. The band features, Tim Roth, 6- and 12-string electric guitars, Keith Lowe, double bass, and Andy Roth, drums. This is bittersweet, melodically distinctive chamber jazz, an evocative combination of swing, bop, blues, west coast cool, and the occasional edge of free jazz, with echoes of French impressionism and other classical piano music and popular music of the 50s and 60s. Recorded in analogue and mixed to stereo and 5.0 DSD, the sound is seductively realistic.
