My 13-month-old son is very engaged with this book when we read it. He enjoys flipping the flaps and going through the book 2-3 times in one sitting--that's a lot for a toddler who has such a short attention span. The illustrations are cute and pretty realistic (no purple elephants!) It teaches fine motor skills with different types of flaps, shows different types of containers, and identifies several animals as well as emotions.

This is an excellent book for preschoolers and early readers. Opening the flaps to find the surprise animal is fun for the youngest child. Beginning readers learn to read the book quickly because of the repetitive nature of the text. The book is very good to stimulate discussions of which animals will make good pets and which pet a child might like to have.
