Cormac McCarthy, considered by many to be America’s greatest living writer, has dealt the insanity of the holocaust of the failed policies of the drug war a severe blow with his first-filmed, original screenplay, “The Counselor”. This intelligent, blacker than night, 2013 film, directed by Ridley Scott, should be required viewing for all law enforcement and all law makers in Amerika (sic): local, state and federal. Mr. McCarthy easily sees through the carefully misplaced blame put on the very lucrative “boogie drugs” and nails it squarely on the power invested in the cartels and underworld, created and funded by the evil greed of the profiteers of prohibition policy of our arguably bought and sold, nefarious, bloody-handed government. The counselor, (Michael Fassbender), plainly states the message of the tragedy to player Westray, (Brad Pitt), “So if the drug war ends, this all dries up …” Although the forty-year, trillion-dollar-plus “Drug War” is considered already over and lost by many, we have yet to see the white flag, much less the balancing of justice: the release of the P.O.W.’s, the war trials and reparations for the war crimes, atrocities and crimes against humanity called for by the millions of victims suffering from the catastrophic ripples of this inane and immoral crusade. History will not be kind to the self righteous, pious policy makers and savage enforcers of yet another shameful, violent and barbaric page of our country’s ofttimes, dishonorable biography. Our children owe the eighty year old Mr. McCarthy their sincere gratitude for giving us this brutal observation of truth and for taking a stand on the lies and intimidations of the taboo. (Isn’t this one role of responsible Art?) Being anti-drug war, after all, does not equate one with being pro-drugs, no matter how hard you twist it or how big your badge, budget, agenda, gun or jail. Both are life and death issues, deserving of intelligence, understanding, reason and truth, not murder and persecution. This R rated, timely masterpiece should be viewed and understood by every voter (with an empty stomach) directly before the polls open for every election.Read full review
