What the movie is really about is the usurping of formerly government-run activities by corporations -- in the present case, the outsourcing of intelligence gathering -- which has given us the hideous surveillance state we now inhabit. The use of SPECTRE as the faceless epitome of evil was merely a clever way of tying it all in to the Bond lore. But it was plainly stated that this entity's modus operandi was to create "terrorist" incidents of a massive scale that would stampede governments into accepting the need for mass surveillance -- conveniently provided by SPECTRE and run by their minions. So much for democracy. Bond, M, Q, and Moneypenny are having none of this, of course, leading to the clash of the last vestiges of the old democratically-controlled intelligence agencies with the hidden perpetrators of the privatized coup d'état. This is definitely not a movie for those with short attention spans. It also requires a thorough familiarity with all of the Bond films, so newcomers to the franchise may find themselves lost.Read full review
