In this remake and updated version of the 1965 THUNDERBALL, James Bond, who has been primarily teaching for the last few years, is quite happily yanked out of semiretirement to deal with the deadly SPECTRE organization's newest plan for the destruction of the planet. (The Bond story line mimics Sean Connery's semiretirement from the role, which he had last played in 1971's DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.) Agent Number 2, also known as Maximilian Largo (Klaus Maria Brandauer), has managed to steal two cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads, and Agent Number 1, Blofeld (Max von Sydow), has threatened to explode them in areas with large populations if a huge, and almost impossible, ransom demand from the NATO countries is not met. The film features an excellent gaming battle between Largo and Bond, as well as stunning turns by Barbara Carrera and Kim Basinger.

Seventy percent Bond
Sean Connery's final appearance on screen as James Bond is featured in this remake of Ian Fleming's THUNDERBOLT. This is the seventh Bond film for Mr. Connery, but because of legal entanglements and a personal dispute with producer Albert Broccoli it's never included in the official lists of James Bond titles. It's still Bond all the way, though. The formula is scrupulously adhered to and we've got everything from car chases down a flight of stairs to a fight in close quarters with an opponent that is more than a match for Bond. Our hero wins of course and goes on to solve the mystery and foil the mischief begun by the bad guys. We wouldn't want it any other way would we? Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera costar as Bond girls while Hollywood magic and a few good stunt men make the aging Sean Connery look like an olympic athlete. Both women use dance moves to develop their character. Basinger displays her curvaceousness in dance and swimming scenes. Where would this film be without her leotards and bathing suit? Barbara Carrera as Fatima Blush does an excellent job of displaying her character's wicked hubris by prancing and posing in a unique ballet style. The movie has been criticized as being predictable and thin, but aren't they all? We don't watch Bond movies for their intellectual qualities. We do watch them for the actors and for the action and there's plenty of that in NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN. I give it a grade of 7 out of 10.Read full review
