All the images and sounds are amazingly crisp and clean. A lot of effort and time was put into these and it shows. The only "very slight" complaint I have with Volume 1 is that in the two color episodes some of the colors were pushed up almost to bleed level, seeming too prominent and distracting. The rest of the colors were so amazing and the image so clear and clean that I had to watch the classic "Sinbad" episode a few times. The menus are easy to navigate and there is an all important "Play All" option as well. The Popeye documentaries are very interesting and informative as well. The few running commentaries I have listened to so far were about what I would expect. Interesting details and tidbits for the hardcore fans, whom this entire set is aimed at. I have gone through almost every feature at this point and haven't run into the problems I had with Popeye Volume 2 at all (bad frame lock - causing an episode to jump throughout, bad frame scratches, etc.). This set deserves absolutely all the praise that everyone has given it. It's had to believe that these can look and sound so good at the 75 year mark. I would love to see Betty Boop and other Fleischer classics with sets like this one. Too bad the WB machine pays no attention to it's audiences most of the time.Read full review
I have always been a sucker for animation. I grew up in the 60's, and there was an abundance of Hannah-Barbera short-cut animation. Don't get me wrong, I loved Yogi, Quickdraw, et al., but even to my preschool eyes I knew the difference from this and _real_ animation. I loved the animation from the 30's and 40's, and Popeye (the OLD ones), were a special treat. Here you have them as you have likely never seen them before. Title sequences that were butchered by the time I ever saw them on TV are restored, and you can feel a little of what moviegoers 70-75 years ago experienced. It was a different world, and different sensibilities. It is easy to romanticize the time, and I don't want to be one of those who blindly consider those the "good ole' days" (hey, I wasn't even around!). But there is no denying that there was a certain innocence and a sense of greater things to come that probably helped a lot of folks through those especially trying economic times, with diversions and escapes such as a Popeye cartoon and Cagney's latest taking a bit of the edge off of what for many was not such a comfortable reality. Politically incorrect? Sure, by the standards of today, but "Hurray!" This is a reflection of the times, and maybe a lot more healthy way to look at ourselves than the eggshell sensibilities that all seem to wear on their sleeves now. As someone of middle eastern descent, I laugh at and enjoy broad stroke depictions of "Ali Baba Arabs" in their cultural and times context just as I do the treatment given others. This is art. This is a time capsule. This is the REAL Popeye.Read full review
For cartoons that are around 70 years old these have really cleaned up nicely. Terrific musical scores, funny dialogue and top notch animation for the time really give this Popeye set a knockout punch. Fascinating extras called "Popumentaries" offers you a closer look at what went into bringing us these wonderful little cartoons. I would recommend this set to any Popeye fan or cartoon enthusiast. This set would also make a great gift for the kids, and provide them a glimpse of what real cartoons ought to be, mindless violent fun where the good guy always wins out and bullying is never tolerated! My four year old is already clamoring for me to buy him a can of spinach. Tooot tooot!
this is a wonderful well made collection of classic fleischer brothers studio popeye cartoons , whether you are old enough to remember seeing these in the movie theatres or just remember them from television or even if you have never seen them at all, these are great cartoons !! they have been remastered and digitally cleaned up , thus looking as good or better than when they were first released in the 1930's... i have other popeye cartoon collections and they are fine for what they are , however the quality on those is nowhere as good as it is on this collection!! another great thing about this series is the deeper history that they get into with the cartoons and their creators .. there are also some wonderful pre popeye fliescher stuff from the 1910's and 1920's.. i highly recommend this dvd set for any fan of popeye or of classic old cartoonsRead full review
