The swearing absolutely wasn't needed in this film, but the casting was perfect and they really stayed true to the characters in all respects. Robin Williams constantly comments how much he hated his role and this film he took part in, but he doesn't understand the iconic film he took part in (as well as others who chastise this film as well), as this film will go down in history. Elsie Chrisler Segar would be proud to watch this, had he lived to see his creation come to the big screen, with the respect it was duely deserved. I've wanted to own this movie for a very long time, but it always slipped my mind everytime I was at my video merchant. My great-niece and great-nephew love the Popeye character and asked me to draw him, since I'm an artist who draws for a living, especially here on eBay, under my handle of gymtoons. You can see my drawing of it in the samples of my art auctions. While I was drawing this for them, it suddenly hit me how great it would be for them to see the film and how I wanted to own it. Once my winning eBay auction DVD arrived, we didn't waste any time in watching it together. Even my 5 and 7 year olds were glued to the screen, in awe of seeing these beloved characters brought to life by a perfect cast, fun story and great effects (considering the time this film was made). Segar first created our 1-eyed sailor as a character who was quite mean to Olive Oyl (many times referring to her as "lath-legs"), while she was dating Ham Gravy, who was Popeye's employer, at the time. Swee' Pea was described best by Popeye cartoonist Bud Sagendorf as an "accident," and he was right. Since then, Swee' Pea became one of the biggest players in the Popeye stories and is loved throughout the World. The 2 characters I missed seeing, as they weren't in the film, were Eugene the Jeep (who is rumored to be the origin behind the most popular vehicle's name) and the Sea-Hag. These characters really coud've been put in the story somewhere also, but alas... If another movie gets made based on these characters (and hopefully it will soon), it would best serve them to use this previous film as a stencil to work from, but be able to use today's better FX to make it today's phenominon. This plus the fact that Popeye would get out of the obscurity he has found due to the lack of attention the World's most popular strip has been given. I'd recommend this film for every member of the family, as it has aspects to please EVERY age and class of person on our planet. After all, it's due to Popeye that people eat spinach in such an enormous fashion. There's not a parent alive who could convince their children to eat their spinach... until they saw POPEYE do it. Get it, see it and live by the immortal words of Popeye: "I yam what I yam!"Read full review
Going through and renting or buying all the cartoon or comic strip or comic book movies that have been filmed. We also sell comic books in our eBay store, so you can see that we have in an interest in this genre. However I have to write what I really think about a movie in these reviews. IMHO this one is barely watchable... even though it is Robin William's first major role in a movie. The Sets are fine, the storyline is ok, but the music and dialogue is terrible! I have liked several of Harry Nilsson's songs in the past, but this film score is not one of the better ones.... I have read several histories on Popeye, I grew up with the cartoons, but this is barely worth watching, sorry!
Great movie from my childhood. Bought to watch with my family: kids and husband. They had never seen it and really enjoyed seeing Robin Williams in this role. Fun movie!!

I remembered seeing the movie when my own children were younger, and wanted to share it with my young grandchildren. I was a little concerned because they were not familiar with the characters, but they really enjoyed it, and we have watched it twice already! I love the way the costumes are so like the comic strip! I think the set design of the town is just fascinating, and the setting of the wonderful rock formations poking up from the sea,(on location in Malta)is so amazing! The casting of the movie was terrific too, especially for Popeye and Olive Oyl, the two main characters! Having grown up with them from the funny papers, it was fun to see old friends again!
More of an adult movie than expected. Followed the old comic strip characters well for us old folks. Reeked of nostalgia (a good thing for this ole lady).
