Besides the aquarium coop green sponge filter, these are the best ones on the market. Ive been keeping fish for over 15 years and I have used every type of filter (HOB, Canister, internal) and this simple sponge outperform them all. The black coarse sponges are the best for bacterial growth while the small pore gray sponges are perfect for water polishing. You can’t beat these sponge filters, even the cheap ones aren’t built as well as these. I highly recommend these for any aquarium enthusiast, experienced or new. The hydro sponges are the best & you will thank yourself for investing in these instead of a cheap knockoff.

Was afraid the volume and surface area would mean this sponge was going to take up a lot of room. Honestly in a 110 oceanic (tall version) I can say I have one tall piece of drift wood that hides this filter really well. It's no bigger than the double sponge ones that stick on and look like a deformed power head. Actually it looks better since it is better suited for the tank. Being weighted and slightly raised from the base means it makes for a great hiding spot for shy fish and inverts. Plus it's not sitting directly on the substrate. Doesn't need an airstone since the airline attaches is a plus since I didn't have to turn around and buy never clog airstones. Water movement is decent and plain to purchase 1 to 2 more and hide in the tank and cut all the small filters out.

With a good air pump, you can power two of these in two different tanks. In the case of a power outage, which kills Canister, Sump and HOB Filters, a battery powered air pump can keep this going. Fry and Plants can’t clog it, easy to clean, and most of all, it’s monthly and yearly cost is $0.00. No replacement filter pads, no specialized nickel and diming expenses. Your fish has to have some powerful teeth to ruin this thing, and since most people don’t own Arapaima or Vampire Tetras I doubt their tank mates will thoroughly damage these filters. No need for gravel or extra hood space. Only flaw really is it takes up tank space, and needs to be covered with plants if going for a scenic tank. That’s really it. If you are reading this and are still unsure, stop reading it and buy it now. Do it. Come on do it right here buy iiiiiiiiiit.Read full review
