I have been a jazz composer for 20+ years, and some of my recordings have been used on TV and movies. I want to expand my writing, arranging, and orchestration techniques to include more classical, rock, and modern ideas. This book is full of tried and true ideas from the last 400 years. Clearly written and easy to understand, provided you already have a background in reading music, basic keyboard, and basic music theory. I found this book at the local library and was so impressed I decided to buy it for my own.
In short, this book is a great read for anyone new to the music composition scene. It gives a lot of attention to how to make compositions your own. Helpful notes on chord progression and consonance/dissonance in writing counterpoint [Which i never understood until this] it also touches on some music theory with strong/weak notes in a scale, and covers the different modes of music. The for idiots series is a great read really for anyone.
It is a value musical book. It is very good book.

Excellent book, I'm loving each chapter I'm reading and I only dislike about not to have a cd with audio samples. I think audio samples, whom has never seen musical theory before, it's essential.
Guide has 18 sections addressing the various aspects of composition and song creating. I was pleasantly suprised about the amount of information provided and the ease of understanding different techniques. If you are starting out or have hit a road block this is a great book.
