This book was written a long time ago (and is written with an eloquence that is rare these days) and it is a quick read, it gives one a God's eye view of history. Especially with regard to the fragility (and sometime surprising durability) of empires and civilizations. We get naturally get caught up in the short term time spectrum of our day to day life. This book rips you out of that and shows no empire has been "bulletproof". Especially against the stupidity of leaders or even changes in the earth's climate. I've been reading history regularly for 50 years and this book is memorable. In fact, I have bought multiple copies to give to my friends. Sometimes you need to step "Way Back" and take a long view in order to understand the present. This book does a fine job of helping one do that. Tom McDanielRead full review
This book is in beautiful condition as advertised. It seems to have been well cared for in its previous life. This book completes Will & Ariel Durant’s “The Story of Civilization” series. Looking forward to reading it. Should be excellent as the others have not been a disappointment.
