The author, Carr, does an amazing job of putting the reader in the late 1890s. Yes, that's right, the story takes place over one hundred years ago. While this might seem like a turn off in regards to a murder-mystery novel, it really helps this story succeed. Because it takes place in the 1890s, technology hasn't been developed for catching serial killers - but nor have the people. A serial killer is something new to the characters of this story and the city they live in. This adds more drama and mystery to the story because they struggle to understand the person behind the bizzare and brutal murders. Caleb Carr presents a detailed description of the murders, the people, his characters solve the mystery using only their minds and the story is intense from page one. This book had me reading late into the night, but I couldn't help but read on. You'll be anxious to see how the team continues to understand and profile the killer, you'll be anxious to see if he kills again, if he gets caught or gets away, who he turns out to be, etc. This book could be turned into a movie and find great success. Although the book takes its name from an old term for psychologists, it's not a terribly deep psychological tale. There will be elements of early psychology from that period in time (considering one of the main characters is a psychologist) it's nothing too complex - anyone will be able to understand the concepts and terms presented. It's definitely a dramatic tale with some elements of action involved. It's rare for me to feel like a book has me on the edge of my seat, wanting to turn the pages, but The Alienist did just that. I think anyone who likes mystery, horror, drama - even Stephen King fans - will find this book to be a good investment.Read full review
A killer of immigrant boys who work the male sex trade to survive..he must be found and stopped..but who is he? And why does he do such horrible things to his victims..In 1896, a psychologist was called an alienest..we wncounter a good one who surrounds himself with a talented crew of law officers and interested folks in his circle of acquaintances..Using brainpower and psychological intuition, the killer is tracked down...This is a great read..and a gripping murder mystery..that I now highly recommend..
