I have been in the process of teaching myself Java and have read several introductory text. By solving physics problems, this book is a great way to delve straight into practical problems -- the language is a secondary tool used to accomplish a greater task. I found the book comparatively easy to read and would recommend it as an undergraduate text book or as a teach-yourself book for those who want to start learning how to solve applied math problems in Java. It may not be as comprehensive as other introductory texts such as Big Java, but I personally find ancillary information distracting in introductory texts.
