About this product

Product Information

The Primal Wound is a book which is revolutionizing the way we think about adoption. In its application of information about pre- and perinatal psychology, attachment, bonding, and loss, it clarifies the effects of separation from the birth mother on adopted children. In addition, it gives those children, whose pain has long been unacknowledged or misunderstood, validation for their feelings, as well as explanations for their behavior. Since its original publication in 1993, The Primal Wound has become a classic in adoption literature and is considered the adoptees' bible. The insight which is brought to the experiences of abandonment and loss will contribute not only to the healing of adoptees, adoptive families, and birth parents, but will bring understanding and encouragement to anyone who has ever felt abandoned.

A must read for the adoption triad!

This is a must read for any member of the adoption triad .....AND anyone who loves them. Even if the reader doesn’t identify with some experiences she writes about, the reader walks away much more enlightened and better able to understand the often devastating trauma of adoption.

  • Opened my eyes!

Right from the beginning, it had me captivated. I was highlighting every other thing I was reading. At my ripe old age of 74 and I’m just now having some triggers I thought were in the past. Wow…I love it. Good for any adoptees and the adoptive parents! Someone that isn’t adopted CAN’T understand the same as another adoptee. 😘

  • fascinating, very scary, but is it scientific?

This book paints adoption as a cruel, cruel thing to do to an innocent child. It was hard for me to read, since my daughter and her husband are actively seeking to adopt a child. The premise is that a baby is born pre-bonded to the woman who has carried it under her heart for nine months, and that separation from this person always involves severe, life-changing trauma to the child. Another daughter (the scientist) pointed out to me that the book has no listed research supporting its claims. Besides that, it is self-published, which means the author couldn't convince a legitimate publishing house of its merit. So maybe the premise isn't really true. I don't know, but I guess it should be read more as one person's opinion than as definite, proven fact.
