If you had to take one reggae album with you to heaven, it would be Catch a Fire. It's forceful, sparse, rebellious, political, and an actual group effort. This is Bob Marley and the Wailers hitting their stride - for the first time on a big label! With the 2-CD version, you can compare the unreleased original Jamaican version to the legendary Island Records release. Try to figure out which one you like best. It may take awhile. It's fun to compare. Note to no one: The cover of the original LP opened up like a Zippo lighter.
This deluxe edition features two discs, the first containing the previously unreleased original Jamaican versions while the second disc showcases the released album versions (with lead guitar added under the direction of Chris Blackwell of Island Records). Originally released in 1973, this classic achieved absolutely no notable chart success at the time (171 on Billboard). This was the major label debut of Bob Marley and the Wailers and did receive considerable international critical praise. Now considered a timeless classic, Catch a Fire gave voice to Marley's universal calls for freedom and justice, in both societal and personal terms. The best tracks: "Concrete Jungle", "Slave Driver", "400 Years", "Stop That Train", and "Stir It Up" showed that Bob Marley was a cultural juggernaut to be reckoned with. No other artist is as universally accepted and admired as Bob Marley, and, for good reason. Combining lyrical intensity and majesty with an infectious rhythm that cannot be ignored, Marley does not so much sing as sear these songs into the hardrives of our collective unconscious. When originally released, this album featured a zippo lighter album cover duplicated on this deluxe version release. It actually functioned like a lighter and you could raise the hinged cover to see the record. The later and more common version showed Marley ingesting the sacrament (ie smoking herb in a "spliff" considered sacred by Bob and all Rastafarians). Everyone should become familiar with Bob Marley as he constitutes one of the major cultural influences of the Twentieth Century. Since this is the first major label release, it would be the logical place to start. The addition of the original cover art and original Jamaican session recordings just sweeten the pot (no pun intended).Read full review
This Catch A Fire delux set is one of about 5 Delux Editions that were released with Marley/Wailers songs. Rastaman Vibration, Exodus, Legend, and possibly Burnin were also released as Delux Editions. Worth having for the collect in particular due to extra tracks. Over all excellent quality and nice packaging. Can pick these up on ebay cheaper then the large music store although the large music stores do still have copies even though they were pressed a few years back. Nice items. I collect 12 inch vinyl Marley/Wailers mostly. Shout here! vinyldude2002@ayhoo.com Respect.....
