I've learned quite a bit from this PBS series of it's show called, "The American Experience." This box set is all about 3 Democratic US presidents of the 20th century & one of their families. The first in depth profile is of the WWII president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). FDR held the highest public executive branch government office in the US longer than any other president: 12 years, 3 terms. FDR was the 32nd US president. There are, of course, various ways to view his presidency. PBS does a good enough job presenting a balanced perspective. The next presidency is the most tragic; so PBS was wise to present much more about the John Fitzgerald Kennedy's (JFK) famous political family. Of all the 20th century presidents, JFK only had the opportunity to serve in his office for 2 years before he was assassinated. He was the youngest & the 35th US president. The brief period of his national leadership left an indelible mark upon US society that stands for empowering, we the people. After JFK was murdered, the nation went through a series of major murders of the most prominent, Democratic political leaders. Many people still believe that these murders are connected and part of a Republican party conspiracy to grab power. Distrust of the US government has pervaded US culture ever since. PBS does an extraordinary job of bringing all of these aspects together. Following the murder of the 35th US president, his Vice President, Lyndon Baines Johnson was immediately sworn in as the US' 36th president. After serving out the remainder of Kennedy's term, Johnson was elected by the largest popular vote margin in US history. To date, LBJ remains the US president who accomplished the most significant & largest amount of changes in American culture. The most historical, was signing the "Civil Rights Act" of 1964, which among other things, made race & gender federally legal protected statuses. The Johnson presidency ended when LBJ refused to run for re-election. His wife, First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, beautified the Nation's Capitol with her planting projects. As a result, spring in DC will always remind those of us who lived through Lady Bird's beautification of her ~♥~. This is a terrific box set that consists of 4 discs of very historical footage for the collectors of Americana~Read full review
