A good general reference to many aspects of bonsai. Following his death, the author's son finished the book, which may explain why it seemed lacking in depth. It is a GOOD book, yet should have given more examples for pruning, shaping and dealing with pre-bonsai training. All of us do not have mature trees to work with, so in this area I wanted more. Many chapters are only 2-3 pages long. There was little or no reference to "troubleshooting" common bonsai problems that many novices encounter. That said, Mr. Kawasumi III paid his father a great tribute by completing this work. He is a third generation bonsai master and his grandfather developed some of the first bonsai tools. Buy the book, but don't pay too much.
I really liked this book because it explained all of the different names for the styles of the trees and also the equipment needed to be successful with your garden. The only thing I wished more info. on was the actual hands on pruning techniques. I needed to see how things were actually done to have enough confidence in the fact that I could accomplish my project with good results. I was left questioning a cut or particular pruning and had to look elsewhere. Overall it is a very good guide. Very informative and beautiful pictures.
Great information and well written.
