This lavish production of Romeo and Juliet succeeds in making the characters engaging, real, and natural. There aren't any long, bombastic monologues, but rather a beautifully conversational rendering of Shakespeare's masterful verse. The movie does omits a fair amount of the original play, but still remains faithful to Shakespeare's vision and intent. These omissions do keep the movie moving right along, a significant benefit to those new to classic drama. The producers spared no expense on the scenery and costumes are both wonderful, and virtually every shot has lovely background details, whether they be architecture or everyday people going about their everyday activities. My only criticism, and it is a minor one really, is that the play's main characters are intended to be teenagers, which Barrymore, Howard, and Shearer are definitely not. Still, their fine performance easily compensates for this inaccuracy. In all, a beautiful rendition of a classic play, surprisingly modern and accessible, especially for 1936.Read full review

This was by far the best version ever! Howard and Shearer played the classic characters and Barrymore is again at his best!
This is by far the best version for Shakespeare lovers to see. Back then actors truly took pride in their work and poured themselves into the part. They embodied the characters. It was amazing. I absolutely loved it. I watch it over and over.
