I have had two factory-installed in-car nav systems, and one handheld PC-based nav system. The Garmin Nuvi 650 is the best I have ever used. Very easy to find and enter destination information. Clearly spoken directions, announcing of street names, and adequate warnings of turns. Tells you the exit number on freeways and whether the exit is to the left or right. Even tells you when you arrive at your desitnation whether it is on the right or left. Very rarely would I disagree with the routing the Garmin wants to use. Fast satellite acquisition. And fast recalculation of routes when you miss a turn accidentally or intentionally pursue a different route. Screen size is excellent - I think the 650 has the best compromise of an easy-to-see and touch screen, without getting too big. The smaller screens are just a little too small for ease of use. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it!Read full review
I have had a Magellan Roadmate300 for about 3 years now. It was a decent travel tool in it's day. This Nuvi 650 appears to be the excellent travel tool plus a whole lot more. There are no negatives from the Nuvi to jump on and start tearing apart. This is one piece of electronics with a fun and friendly interface. Instead of being tough or "picky" to enter addresses and points of interest, it is simple and very often fills in the blanks correctly before you have to type much. The thin slim design allows for easy portability and protection of the unit. The unit is solid and well designed. Garmin has remained the forerunner of GPS solutions, this Nuvi 650 is a very prime example why they still remain on top of their branch of the industry. But THIS GOES FOR ALL TYPES GPS UNITS!!!! Whether or not I will remain happy with the unit can greatly depend on the cost of upgrading maps and locations, etc. As well as keeping it operational well into the future. Those two factors play a tremndous role in how you will benifit from your GPS choice too. For your own benifit, please keep these two things in mind (Upgrade Cost and Service Life) For example I only purchased this new GPS because Magellan wanted so much for upgrade maps. Hopefully this knowledge in advance may keep you out of the same situation in the future. I hated to trash a perfectly good magellan, but old maps can really confuse drivers in rapidly changing metropolitan areas. Exit ramps being moved and/or streets redirected can leave you and your old maps very very lost. Also was pleased to see that the Garmin has all of it's maps preloaded. Placing photographs and music on a SD card for it turned out to be a lot of fun as well. This is a solid unit, prepared by a reputable company in the GPS industry. All I can say is it feels right, speaks clear, and does everything it claims it can....so far very well. over all product rating in my eye is a A-Read full review
This is my second purchase of the Garmin 650. We wanted another in our second vehicle. I would highly recommend purchasing it if you can still get this model. It is no longer being made there are reconditioned ones readily available. Pros: easy to use, fast loading, routing is accurate, numerous POI's (useful to get phone numbers on the road), tells you what road you are on and what road is coming up (very helpful if you are lost), take it on trips and enter your hotel address into favorites and you can forget about getting lost -- no map reading, --whenever you are ready to go back to the hotel go to favorites and get step by step instructions! Cons: doesn't allow entering of multiple routing addresses for my weekly garage sale routing -- but that is a really minor issue I have had other vehicle installed GPS units. The first GPS unit came in the vehicle we purchased and I looked at it as something "fun" to have. GPS units are more than fun to me now -- they are very useful and now required. I purchased our first Garmin 650 for our second car and so we had access in that vehicle and we could take it on vacation when we had a rental vehicle. Wow what a difference the Garmin 650 is from the vehicle GPS! The Garmin 650 is more accurate and easier to use than any of the vehicle units I have/had. The wide screen makes if very easy to see as you are driving and navigating. I liked the Garmin 650 GS so much that we purchased the second unit for a vehicle that already has GPS installed because the Garmin 650 is far superior to the vehicle unit! I highly recommend that you buy this model, you won't be disappointed!Read full review
i like the 650 easy use to find where you want to go. Just open the viewer and wait till it finds where you are and than tell it where you want to go. When you put the city in it finds the city faster than i can type and just press and go when the gps finds it. Directions are very clear and tells you which side of the Street or highway to get off of ahead of time.If your traveling and need to stop to eat it gives you dinners along the route you are traveling and you can call ahead to see what kind of food they are serving. It will recalurate if you make a wrong turn. I bought it because i love to drive but have no sense of direction and this always finds my home, and know what lane to be in for the next turn,
Bought this unit for my wife for Christmas. Bought it for Garmin's reputation and for features. Also got a very good price, as this is a discontinued item. This unit was refurbished by Garmin, and came with a one year Garmin guarantee. Since it was a discontinued item, I was concerned about map updates. I contacted Garmin, and was told that my unit had been loaded with the 2009 maps, and that updates would be available. We're happy! Used the Garmin on a recent trip over the holidays, and all worked well. This unit also has an MP3 player, and we downloaded a book which we listened to. We honestly get a kick out of the slightly perturbed "recalculating" voice we hear when we choose a different route than the one suggested..."
