JVC has a checkered history with this model and its variations(there's an MV40, 45, 50 and 55 that I'm aware of, and there may be more), but when they work properly it's one of the best ideas anyone ever came up with for dubbing SD analog videotapes and dvds. I have 5 of them and am always on the lookout for more. PROS: Great image quality and versatility, with multiple inputs including dv. Excellent multi-setting dvd quality feature. CONS: Unfortunately, the firmware that drives them can be astonishingly fragile, and sometimes even a mild power surge will fry the electronics - sure sign of death is when you go to turn it on and it crashes, then gets stuck in an endless loop of "LOADING". When this happens they're really not worth trying to fix. The one time I tried to have one repaired JVC charged me over 400 bucks and even then it had to be returned for something they overlooked. This was several years ago; they may not even service them anymore. Also, a convoluted, remote control-access only menu system that takes awhile to master. Annoying shortcoming - dv IN but not OUT, and the dv jack is very fragile. SOOOO... Be sure seller assures it is fully tested and functional; don't waste time with untested units. MUST HAVE THE REMOTE to fully utilize all features. Still, can be a great unit to have!Read full review
