I have played the Hogan PC's for ten years now and find they are the best blade out there. It is true, they are hard to hit and should not be played unless you are a mid single digit handicap or less. Personally I feel the apex shafts that were standard when these clubs were made in the mid 80's are inferior to the shafts today. I have a fast, quick tempo to my golf swing and I have always played with True Temper DG X100's. This is my third set of Hogan PC's. The first was worn when I bought them and I found a great set to replace them. The third set it to tuck away for when my current set wears out. They are that good. They tend to have a soft feel, but hard enough to feel like the ball is jumping off the face. I have worked on and off in the golf business so I have had my hands on my different types of blades, or even progressive sets of irons (ie: bridgestone J33, J36, etc) and have yet to find a blade that I feel is a better club. That says a lot for club make 25 years ago. Plus, whey spend $799 to $899 for a new set of blades when you can find a great set of PC's for $100 to $250? There is not a real high demand for them these days due to the fact that they are the hardest blades to hit and people seem to think that their technology is outdated. The latter is false. They are very hard to hit for a so-so ball striker, but the technology has not been replaced for a pure ball striker. Overall they get an A+ for performance, an A for appearance, and an A+ for cost. If you truely have the game, and not a inflated ego, these will be a great set of clubs with a little extra care (reshafting, regripping, lie/loft adjusting, etc).Read full review
These clubs are old but still kicking high. The feel of forged blades is just great, and they will let you know it when you mis-hit them. Golf ball flies plenty high, and with these clubs it's a little easier to control the ball flight. I also play Mizuno MP 32s. I thought being old clubs I would get less distance, but was I wrong. E wedge has 50 degree of loft, but it hits as long as Mizuno's P wedge which has 47 degree loft. FYI, Mizuno irons have DG S300 shafts, the Apex PC irons have ben hogan 4 flex. After all these years, the clubs have all those scratches and all, but they can kick the ball with plenty of punch.
I found a site on the Internet that said these clubs were made from 1984 to 1987. My set was discovered in a thrift store at the ridiculous price of $2.00 per club. It was a 3-E, but the 9 iron was missing so I spent $14 for the incomplete "set." I bought the 9 iron along with a 2 iron on e-Bay for another $14 and recently I got a Hogan Special SI sand wedge to round out the set for $9. For less than $40 I've got a very nice set of clubs. These clubs are designed to reward good shots and remind you of bad shots. They do an excellent job on both accounts. Here we are 20+ years after they were last produced and I'm not sure there's a forged club that is any better than the Hogan PC. So here's the bottom line. If you want to improve your swing and focus on getting a perfect, Hogan-like golf swing with consistent ball striking, then these are your clubs. If you're looking for something that will help make your somewhat less than perfect swing produce a little more distance, hide a few more flaws or cover up a few more errors, avoid these like the plague!Read full review
One of the finest golf clubs ever designed--if not the BEST! A true 'player's' club. While certainly not a 'game improvement' or forgiving club, it is a REWARDING club in the sense that, well-struck shots stay on-line to the target, providing positive feedback to the golfer. An iron that golfers at all levels of skill should try at least once, in order to see what the golfing concept of "feel," really 'feels' like!
Ben Hogan knew what he was doing by producing forged blade irons like these pc apex version. All players should play forged blade irons because they give you instant feedback if your swing is not right. The modern clubs forgive a few bad swings but forged blades do not. Before you know it with modern clubs, your swing is bad and you probably made 50 bad swings before you are aware what is happening. So, play with forged blade irons or quit griping about your swing.
